On purpose. Really, on purpose.

I’m an advocate for satire. I’m an advocate for news. I’m not, however, CNN.com, who in an unbelievably mind-blowing decision posted … um, ahhh … “news,” I guess they called it, from The Onion, the sometimes funny but intentionally satirical pre-Daily Show-type news source. On purpose.

Yesterday CNN.com posted The Onion article, Flustered Bush misses Air Force One flight. Not an article about the article. But the actual article. On purpose.

It’s headed by this warning from CNN.com’s editors:

Editor’s note: This may look like a real news story, but it’s NOT. It is from The Onion, a humor publication that calls itself “America’s finest news source.” CNN may beg to differ, but we do enjoy a good laugh and hope you will enjoy a weekly selection of their satire.

I don’t think we’re in danger of the average American mistaking one of these articles as news. I do think we’re in danger of loosing valuable editors who I pray have more to do than scour the Internet for other site’s fake content.

Is this really how we want to boost online readership?
