New Features, One Step At A Time

You’ll now find a running list of del.icio.us links in the right column of the site. I’ve been adding a mix of news, but especially the work of other writers I’ve loved.

The update is somewhat inspired by Howard Owens, a media blogger, who recently posted a list of objectives for today’s “non-wired” journalists. He writes:

“I suspect there are still too many non-wired journalists in most US newsrooms. Either out of fear, indifference or hubris, too many reporters and editors resist using the Internet for anything beyond the occasional Google search (and heaven forbid they ever click a search result link to Wikipedia) and a daily dose of Romenesko (and heaven forbid if you call him what he is, a blogger).

That just isn’t acceptable.”

I agree. I admit I’m far from the most wired journalist out there (shameful for my age, I know), but I’m encouraged with the comments posted in response to his recommendations (start a blog, buy a digital camera, post to YouTube, join LinkedIn and Facebook … you get the idea).

I’ll aim to check a few more off his list.

I’ve never even heard of Howard Owens, but I’m glad to know that I’ve already been doing much of what he’s talking about. For the most part, I agree with what he says.

The other thing that I’ve noticed is — particularly with YouTube — you have two audiences: one for your blog and all that appears in it, and another (viewing) audience from Flickr or YouTube. Someone might be surfing YouTube that has/will never read your blog, but they will see your video.
