The resume page is also updated with new awards added.

Awards season

I unfortunately missed the weekend’s Society of Professional Journalists conference in Richmond, so I wasn’t on hand when James Madison University racked up a few awards.
We compete in region 2; that’s Virginia, North Carolina, Washington, D.C., and Maryland.
Congrats to Jill Yaworksi of JMU who won third place in “non-fiction magaine writing” for a piece titled […]

Four Years and Counting…

On the fourth anniversary of the war in Iraq, we ran two pieces on the front Daily News-Record, one on peace vigils, one on a support our troops rally. They ran side by side, of near equal length, with photos of the same size and headlines to match.

Forecasters called for ice up to […]

Invisible Children

From Wednesday’s Daily News-Record:

By Kelly Jasper
HARRISONBURG — The film opens on a shot of a young Ugandan, a boy with a sack over his shoulder. As the boy treks through dark city streets, he is lit mostly by the camera that films him.
That nameless boy, captured on film three years ago, leaves […]

It just makes you feel good …

From Monday’s Daily News-Record:
Man Shares Kidney With Co-Worker
By Kelly Jasper
BRIDGEWATER — A year ago, Rick Shifflett’s doctors offered a word of advice.
“They told me I needed to start making friends again,” the 58-year-old Bridgewater man said with a laugh.
Shifflett, his doctors told him, would need a kidney transplant.
It came as no surprise.
Shifflett was already […]
